The Most Disappointing Video Games of the Year 2025, Based on Aggregate Scores

Across the internet, enthusiasts are quick to share their lists of the top titles of 2025. However, what of the stinkers, the underperformers? It's time to take a moment to examine the most panned games of the year, based on the aggregate scores from Metacritic. Are all of these games truly as terrible as their scores suggest? Here is the list.

10. Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour

Aggregate Score: 54/100, User Score: 3.4/10

The early response to this showcase title were colored by its $9.99 price tag, with many expressing disappointment it wasn't a free pack-in like competing console launches. Professional assessment varied dramatically, from harsh disappointment to somewhat forgiving reviews that praised the charming software itself. In spite of the debate, the title proved to be a surprisingly robust seller during its launch month.

9. Rennsport

Metascore: 53/100, Audience Score: 3.2/10

Marketed as "not just a racing game," this simulation from Competition Company and Teyon received pretty unanimous reviews. Critics noted that the game was lacking in almost every category, notably in a year filled with excellent racing titles. For many, this sputtering stinker was better off left in the garage.

8. The Purrfect Bubsy Collection

Aggregate Score: 53/100, Audience Score: 8.6/10

Before we start: the awkward title grammar is a minor point of contention. This anthology of 1990s-era mascot platformers features a "attitude"-filled feline known for constant quips. The consensus was that these games were not good to begin with and haven't gotten better with age. The improbably high user score stands as a baffling anomaly to the critical reception.

7. Hunter x Hunter Fighting Game

Metascore: 53, Audience Score: 3.5

This *Hunter x Hunter* brawler encountered harsh criticism from both critics and the dedicated community. Complaints centered on a small character selection and a severe lack of content. Player sentiment was especially vitriolic, with some expressing a desire that the title's flop would serve as a lesson for the developers.

6. Riders Vs Dogoos

Metascore: 51, Audience Score: 5.3

A part of the anime-style Hyperdimension Neptunia series, this motorcycle action game tasks players with rounding up slime-like creatures. The assessment was that its effort to recreate a rolling-collection experience was unsuccessful, coming across as more of a cash grab than a meaningful Neptunia game. Its 3-hour duration combined with a full retail cost seemed like a bold choice.

5. Captain Blood

Metascore: 50, User Score: 5.3

This title is a piece of lost media from the Xbox era, finally released after a very long time in production delays. The team behind it made the decision to release the game as an original experience of its time, acknowledging that modern gamers might criticize its old-school mechanics. As such, many reviews concluded that the tale of its resurrection was far richer than the actual gameplay.

4. Scar-Lead

Aggregate Score: 44, User Score: 2.4

This anime-art roguelike shooter modeled after games like *Returnal* disappointed with critics. Frequent criticisms included repetitive adversaries, repetitive levels, and a unengaging plot. A much-criticized system involving the outfit degradation was widely panned and took away from the game's potential charm.

3. Ambulance Life

Metascore: 44, Audience Score: 4.9

Think of the tense medical sims of the past, then strip away the satisfying gameplay. That, according to reviews, is roughly *Ambulance Life*. Critics found the ambulance-driving sequences to be monotonous, and the treatment of its subject matter was criticized as being insensitive. The overall experience was deemed not very compelling.

2. Tamagotchi Plaza

Metascore: 43, User Score: 5.8

This shift away from the classic virtual pet formula transforms the franchise into a minigame collection title. The result, per critics, was a unsatisfying assortment of repetitive tasks that very soon overstayed its welcome. Some reviews went so far as to call it one of the worst titles available on its platform, noting a profound lack of depth.

1. MindsEye

Metascore: 37, User Score: 2.5

Positioned as a high-profile crime saga from a studio led by experienced developers, *MindsEye* was a catastrophic disappointment. Reviews savaged its lousy combat, dull missions, and a plethora of game-breaking glitches. Critics found it to be a downgrade compared to decades-old games in the similar style. Despite the overwhelming criticism, a tiny number of optimistic players found something to enjoy in the experience, providing a distinct vote of confidence.
