The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
