Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
